The two-term governor was seen as a possible ultraconservative contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. That was before he vanished from the state for five days in 2009. Reporters were told he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but he later tearfully acknowledged he was visiting Maria Belen Chapur, which he told everyone at news conference announcing his affair. He later called her his soul mate in an interview with AP.

Conservative Republican Senator Jim DeMint from South Carolina has announced that he will leave the Senate in January to become president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research group. DeMint was an instrumental force in the tea party movement.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was on Meet the Press this past week to discuss the future of the GOP. While being completely wrong about why Mitt Romney and his party suffered such big losses, he did manage to take his one correct statement from a certain somebody.

Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) proposed overall electric rate hike of

6.61%.  Many of you will complain that if

we just deregulated the energy market and stop forcing residential and commercial

customers to get their energy from SCE&G, Duke, Progress or a co-op, competition

would bring down rates.

That’s

what they did in New York in the late 1990s. 

So it is instructive that the N.Y. Public Service Commission ...

For those of you in the South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) territory, get ready to mark your calendars.  The power company is asking for an overall

rate increase of 6.6% on electricity for its 660,000 customers.  For small businesses the rate hike would be

4.19% and residential customers would pay a whopping 7.35% more for electricity.  The total new money being sought from customers by SCE&G with this filing is $151.5 million.

This rate hike has nothing to do with the SCE&G construction ...

The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), which represents small- and

medium-sized companies, calls on candidates for office to stop misleading

voters with bogus data based on inaccurate definitions of small business.

Specifically, a report commissioned by the National Federation of Independent

Business (NFIB) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, implied a complete falsehood:

that the top 3% of small businesses are responsible for more the 50% of jobs in

the United States.

I have to admit that I was envious when Mitt Romney

cited the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) twice during last

week’s Presidential debate.  The

small-business pretender organization was effectively used by Mr. Romney to

give credibility to his argument that allowing the tax rates on households with

over $250,000 in income would cause small businesses to shed 710,000 jobs.

This estimate was based on a highly questionable report

partially paid for by the NFIB. 

Candidate Mitt Romney has been criticized for his past statement that he

likes to fire people.  Apparently the

same holds true for large yellow birds. 

But as much as Romney’s

comment of defunding PBS resulted in the biggest twitter explosion of last

night’s debate, it was the GOP candidate’s denial that federal tax law gives tax

deductions for businesses that move jobs out o...
