MIRS.A new poll by the Democratic firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner shows House Speaker Jase BOLGER (R-Marshall) trailing his little-known Democratic opponent in the 63rd Districts by 4 points, which is within the margin of error. Polling results obtained by MIRS have Bolger at 45 percent and Bill FARMER at 49 percent. This is in keeping with a MIRS/Practical Political Consulting poll this month that showed Bolger up by 3 points, 51.5 to 48.5 percent, which is within the margin of error (See "Bolger's Lead In 63rd Within Margin Of Error," 9/11/12)....snip......

This was a big development in climate circles about 10 days ago. Luckily, we have Midlander Peter Sinclair to explain it to us and explain its significance. The reality that I don't think he hits on nearly enough is that not only is it quite likely that we're watching climate change take place before our eyes, that it's all been happening much faster than the models predicted. Those models, by the way, conservatives claimed were always wrong. Conservatives were right, but that's only because things have been worse than anyone imagined.

For years, the Detroit News has taken the stock editorial position that the state had to stick with coal energy, because it couldn't afford not to. They did this, advising that Consumers ignore the hippies and go forward and build a bunch of new coal plants ... all of which were eventually mothballed or canceled outright because they became too damned expensive to build.

I had open, and lost, an article in my browser from the other day in which Ruth Johnson, who said that she is compelled to include on ballot applications a question asking voters again whether they are U.S. citizens because of widespread electoral fraud perpetrated by Canadians (as near as anyone can tell), said that the real Chicken Littles are the people who say there was confusion at the polls over her question.

What does Alfred Thayer Mahan, the Colonial exploitation of Africa, and Obamacare have to do with the Populist Party? I have no idea, and it doesn't appear that MLive's in-house sedetionist has a clear idea, either. That's okay for me, because at least I didn't write a column tying them all together.

Mitt Romney went to NBC’s Education Nation Summit Tuesday to deliver his usual set of already-failed ideas on the subject: dump kids in giant classes to learn a curriculum entirely centered around standardized testing and taught by teachers paid according to said standardized test scores. But beyond his ideas about what should go on in the schools, he offered another classic for thee but not for me theory about how the political process should work:

“I don’t mean to be terribly partisan, but I kind of am,” he followed up, to laughs from the audience, before calling the donations from teachers’ unions to Democratic politicians an “extraordinary conflict of interest” because those politicians are then supposed to stand up to the unions and for students in negotiations.

Mitt Romney has gotten giant contributions from the financial sector and he’s running for president vowing to repeal Wall Street reform. Romney’s entire campaign is about his promise to govern on behalf of his biggest donors and assorted other rich people like himself.

Okay, sunshines, so here's how things worked 20 and 30 years -- perhaps even longer -- ago ... your local Tee Vee station had its own news department. It was considered a cash loser, because news never generates much revenue, but Tee Vee stations were expected to have them because the airwaves the station was broadcasting on were considered to be a public resource and the station was expected to manage them for the public's benefit.

A couple of weeks ago, Skubick had an online column about how Rick Jones so hates the medical marijuana law that he wants to put it back on the ballot during an off-election year because he's confident that the state's electorate, if given the opportunity, would ban medical marijuana. Among other things, it explains why some of the stuff that really ought to be addressed by a simple statute is being promoted this year as necessary amendments to the constitution. In years past, you would expect elected government to take seriously such a strong statement on behalf of the electorate.
