Guarded Optimism: Justice Dept Holds Hearings to Examine Prison Rape
Last week, the Justice Department convened hearings under the Prison Rape Elimination Act to examine the prevalence of rape and sexual abuse in the nation’s prisons and juvenile detention centers. In a 2013 survey of more than 8,700 juveniles housed in 326 facilities across the country, 8 percent said they experienced sex abuse at the hands of the staff supervising them. Twenty percent of those who said they were victimized by staff said it happened on more than 10 occasions.

Know When to Hold 'Em: Attorney General Calls for Major Changes in Prison Sentencing
With the U.S. facing massive overcrowding in its prisons, Attorney General Eric Holder is calling for major changes to the nation's criminal justice system that would scale back the use of harsh sentences for certain drug-related crimes. Federal prisons are operating at nearly 40 percent above capacity and hold more than 219,000 inmates.
