Newt Gingrich has a crazy idea. Sources close to his dwindling campaign say he is in talks with Rick Perry in hopes of getting him on a ticket before the Republican convention in August.
"Gingrich insiders hope forming a predetermined ticket with Perry will unite the evangelical, Tea Party and very conservative voters that make up the core of the GOP," FOX News reports in an exclusive story.
Perry's office isn't denying the rumors: "Gov. Perry thinks Newt Gingrich is the strongest conservative to debate and defeat President Obama and truly overhaul Washington. The speculation is humbling but premature."
This news is hilarious and everyone should enjoy a hearty laugh.
Let's review. Rick Perry is a failed candidate who made so many gaffes during his campaign that he was practically laughed off of the campaign trail. After his initial blaze faded, Perry wasn't pulling any subset of the Republican electorate. From "oops" to making up a country called "Solynda," Perry made a mockery of himself and is now firmly embedded in American political history as a national joke.
Newt Gingrich, on the other hand, is still in the race. Barely. He has only won two states of over twenty that have voted - and one was Georgia, his home state. He has never recovered from his devastating loss in Florida, when Americans realized what an abhorrent man Newt Gingrich is. More than anything, Newt Gingrich is associated with serial infidelity, hostility, and arrogance. This is a man who said his first wife was "not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of a president." Despite all the overwhelming evidence that Republicans are done with him, Gingrich has pledged to stay in the race until the convention, even though it appears Mitt Romney will have secured enough delegates by then to win the nomination.
The idea that a Gingrich-Perry combo would "energize" Republicans is an idea as stupid as making inner-city children work their way through elementary school (one of Newt's favorites). They are two abysmal candidates with enough negative press to last for decades. Both Gingrich and Perry have made themselves drastically less popular, both within their own party and nationally, over the course of this campaign. And for good reason. They would make an atrocious ticket.
The statement from Perry's office indicates he wants to be on this ticket. Not surprising; Rick Perry is an egotistical pill who can't stand the thought of losing.
Remind you of anyone?

In his race for US Senate, David Dewhurst is promoting "The Dewhurst Plan," a list of disgusting corporatist policies designed to make you poorer and Dewhurst's donors richer. The plan is a complete farce, representing what is worst about modern politics and the Republican Party.
The plan's biggest lie is in the subtitle: "Repeal Obama's Job-Killing Agenda
Institute Pro-Growth Dewhurst Plan."
Lie. President Obama has done the exact opposite of killing jobs.
President Obama entered the White House in 2009 and immediately started turning around the declining jobs numbers. For a president in his situation, with a disastrous economy left to him by an incompetent predecessor, he has a deeply successful jobs record.
Here's the proof:
February marked two straight years of private sector job growth. Not that the facts about American jobs are important to Dewhurst, but facts are ultimately what's important to our country. As progressives, the facts affecting our nation matter to us much more than the ideological garbage that gutter candidates like David Dewhurst spew out.
David Dewhurst is a liar. President Obama is a job creator. End of story.
On Wednesday, UT's University Democrats and College Republicans debated about issues ranging from birth control to immigration.
The debate itself was only half the show, as the College Republicans took to Twitter to make their awful views known. Here are some of the worst tweets the College Republicans put out during the debate and my responses to them.
1) A sonogram allows women to make an INFORMED CHOICE. #debateCRUD - Melanie Schwartz, Executive Director of Texas College Republicans2) I think the crux of this argument boils down to personal responsibility ... and clearly the @UDems don't believe in it. #DebateCRUD - Jessica LaBerge, College Republican
3) So a pre-abortion sonogram is a violation of a woman's body, but an actual abortion is not? #ridiculous #DebateCRUD #htvdebate - Tori Moreland, College Republican
4) Not wanting to take the bus to go get an ID is NOT disenfranchising it's laziness #DebateCRUD - Saul Mendoza, College Republican
My replies to this gross display of violent ignorance:
1) A forced sonogram is nothing but an attempt to obstruct a woman's right to carry out her decision to have an abortion. She's already in a doctor's office. Have you ever read Hill v. Colorado? Of course not. And you advocate limited government, Ms. Schwartz?
2) Nice point, Ms. LaBerge. Your organization has produced two presidents in the last six months who have made national news for publicizing their repellant personal beliefs about race. And you're lecturing the scandal-less UDems about personal responsibility?
3) An abortion is a woman's choice. Being forced to get a sonogram once she's made that decision is an invasive Republican mandate. End of debate.
4) This is not about getting on a bus, Mr. Mendoza, and you completely miss the point in your whirlwind of GOP talking points. Voter ID is about targeting a specific group of voters and making it much harder for them to vote. Republicans don't stand up for justice, they stand up for themselves and their corporate daddies who benefit from their election. At any price. On some level, Mr. Mendoza must know this.
Not all the College Republican awfulness was tweeted. At the debate, College Republican debater Ben Mendelson said that "'Anchor babies' is not a derogatory term.'"
That is a lie. 'Anchor babies' is a Republican claim that Mexicans are coming to the United States and having children so they can stay with them. It plays on racist stereotypes of Mexican families, attitudes, and trustworthiness. It is hate at its ugliest.
But the College Republicans don't consider 'anchor babies' a derogatory term. This is a club that is steeped in hateful beliefs that go against the fundamental justice and equality that the United States stands for. They are not thinking about the issues; they are Republican robots. They offer a talking point debate and public shame for our university.
'College Republican' is a derogatory term on the Forty Acres. For good reason.
