Dr. King: 'It Is a Crime for People to Live in This Rich Nation and Receive Starvation Wages'

Dr. King: 'It Is a Crime for People to Live in This Rich Nation and Receive Starvation Wages'
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr spent a lifetime fighting for working people: for a recognition of the dignity of labor, demanding a living wage to lift all people out of poverty. His cause has become our cause in 2014 as Democrats are fighting for minimum wage increases and our president echoes the words of Dr. King: "... let's declare that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full time should have to live in poverty."

A Moral And Economic Imperative to Extend Unemployment Benefits

A Moral And Economic Imperative to Extend Unemployment Benefits
Federal unemployment assistance for 1.3 million people who have been unemployed longer than 26 weeks expired last Saturday, after Republicans blocked efforts to extend them. 3.6 million more people will lose these benefits over this year. Restoring these benefits is a moral, economic and political imperative.

Repealing the Prevailing Wage Would Cost IL 3,300 Jobs, $1B in GDP, $44M in Taxes, Says New Study

Repealing the Prevailing Wage Would Cost IL 3,300 Jobs, $1B in GDP, $44M in Taxes, Says New Study
Beginning January 1st, Tennessee eradicated the prevailing wage. Throughout California, cities are attempting to charterize in order to do the same thing. In Illinois, growing budget deficits and underfunded pensions have some lawmakers on the right calling for the repeal of this age-old wage protection in the name of “taxpayer savings.” This broad, counterproductive strategy does more to benefit special interests groups than the labor market on which prevailing wages have a clear, positive effect.

TN's New Year's Resolution: Hurt Workers, Undermine Prevailing Wage Law

TN's New Year's Resolution: Hurt Workers, Undermine Prevailing Wage Law
Tennessee has de facto killed the state's prevailing wage law. While still on the books, businesses no longer are mandated to abide by it. Seems that Republican lawmakers' New Year's resolution was to lower workers' wages even more.

Wage-Old Truth: Increasing Pay Doesn’t Decrease Job Growth

Wage-Old Truth: Increasing Pay Doesn’t Decrease Job Growth
New studies are lending support to the idea that an increase in the minimum wage, tacked to keep pace with inflation, does not bring stagnation to local economies. In fact, higher wages coincide with less worker turnover, higher productivity, and higher levels of job satisfaction.

Will Seattle Join One of Its Suburbs with a $15 Minimum Wage?

Will Seattle Join One of Its Suburbs with a $15 Minimum Wage?
As previously reported, SeaTac, a small town outside of Seattle, voted to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour on Nov. 5. The victory was confirmed Tuesday after a recount and will go into effect after a corporate-backed lawsuit over the wage is resolved. Now working family activists in Washington State are hoping to ride the success of the SeaTac vote to Seattle, and they’ve found support from the mayor and the majority of City Council members.

One Answer to Low-Wage Work: Redistributing the Gains

One Answer to Low-Wage Work: Redistributing the Gains
The President’s speech last week on inequality avoided the “R” word. No politician wants to mention “redistribution” because it conjures up images of worthy “makers” forced to hand over hard-earned income to undeserving “takers.” The number of losers is growing so quickly, and so much of the economy's winnings are going to a small group at the top — since the recovery began, 95 percent of the gains have gone to the richest 1% — that some direct redistribution of the gains is necessary.

Laborers Furious as PA GOP Attempts to Tie Prevailing Wage Repeal to Infrastructure Spending

Laborers Furious as PA GOP Attempts to Tie Prevailing Wage Repeal to Infrastructure Spending
Pennsylvania’s broken record budget battle — in which the GOP is holding much needed infrastructure spending hostage in exchange for slashing wage protections — has laborers fuming. The State House is 30 votes shy of being able to pass a gas tax hike needed to fund the infrastructure and transportation plan, so Republicans are attaching a prevailing wage repeal to the legislation in order to earn conservative votes.
