Bravo 'Bama: Religious Acceptance in Hunstville as Atheist Will Deliver City Invocation for First Time

Bravo 'Bama: Religious Acceptance in Hunstville as Atheist Will Deliver City Invocation for First Time
Thursday's opening invocation at the Huntsville City Council meeting will be delivered by an atheist. This is a first for the Council, which was in the news earlier this year, when it invited — then dis-invited a Wiccan priest — to deliver the opening invocation at a regular council meeting. It was a silly, spineless decision, made after "several citizens became alarmed" at the prospect of listening to a Wiccan prayer and called to complain. We wonder if those same concerned citizens will have the same issues this time.

VA Gov Shuts Down Attempts by Far Right Nuts to Violate Church, State Separation
Two vetoes by Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe were upheld by the legislature. The two bills vetoed would have enshrined some of the "religious freedom" dogmas the far right has been pushing of late.

Ted Cruz: Jesus Hates Health Care, aka Some Stuff About Religious Liberty at Risk
Possible Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz said Wednesday that religious Americans have a duty to take a stand against policies, such as President Barack Obama's health care law, that could threaten their liberties. The Texas Republican and tea party favorite used his appearance here at the Virginia school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell to test a message to young evangelicals, a critical voting bloc for any Republican with White House ambitions.

Religious Freedom and Birth Control: A Reading List for the Hobby Lobby Cases

Religious Freedom and Birth Control: A Reading List for the Hobby Lobby Cases
Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods birth control cases, the most significant religious-freedom cases in at least a generation. The central issue is whether or not companies whose owners have deep-seated religious objections to some forms of contraception should be required to provide birth control benefits to employees. A ruling isn’t expected until the end of June, so there’s plenty of time to do some background reading.

In a speech at the University of Miami, Hillary Rodham Clinton applauded Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's refusal to sign onto a hateful 'religious freedom' bill that would have made it easier to discriminate against gay couples. Clinton also promoted civic participation, and talked on a range of foreign policy issues.

Anti-Gay KS Bill Is Dead, But Battle Against 'Religious Freedom' Lives On

Anti-Gay KS Bill Is Dead, But Battle Against 'Religious Freedom' Lives On
An anti-gay marriage proposal that roiled Kansas politics is dead, the chairman of a state Senate committee assigned to review it said Tuesday. But the declaration from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Jeff King didn't appear likely to end the debate over providing legal protections for people and organizations refusing for religious reasons to provide goods and services to gay and lesbian couples.

Obama at Prayer Breakfast: Religious Freedom Is A National Security Issue

Obama at Prayer Breakfast: Religious Freedom Is A National Security Issue
"Freedom of religion matters to our national security," intoned President Barack Obama at this year's National Prayer Breakfast. Unlike the right's concept of religious freedom, generally, the President meant all religions and their ability to congregate freely, not just the uniformly Christian members of today's GOP.

Bill Allowing Religious Student Groups Access to State Money Postponed Indefinitely by CO Lawmakers
State lawmakers have narrowly killed a bill that would have freed up state money to religious student groups – even those demonstrating prejudice in picking their leaders. The measure would have prevented universities from enforcing non-discrimination requirements for religious groups seeking state funding and other resources available to student organizations.
