ALEC Greasing the Wheels for More Fracking, Gas Exports and CNG Powered Vehicles

ALEC Greasing the Wheels for More Fracking, Gas Exports and CNG Powered Vehicles
Late last week, legislative and lobbyist members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) voted on model legislation promoting both exports of gas obtained via fracking and vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). Dubbed a “corporate bill mill” by its critics, ALEC is heavily engaged in a state-level effort to attack renewable energy and grease the skids for exports of U.S. oil and gas.

Lobbyists Bidding to Block Government Regs Set Sights on Secretive White House Office

Lobbyists Bidding to Block Government Regs Set Sights on Secretive White House Office
OIRA operates largely in secret, exempt from most requests under the Freedom of Information Act. It routinely declines to release the changes it has proposed, the evidence it has relied upon to make them, or the identities and affiliations of White House advisers and other agencies' staff it has consulted. OIRA doesn't even disclose the names and credentials of its employees other than its two most senior officials. Maybe that's why you've never heard of OIRA.

Fox in the Henhouse: NY Gov Lets Mortgage Lobbyist Police Subprime Scandal
New York's Governor, Andrew Cuomo, has brought on a banking industry lobbyist as his chief policer of the banks that brought on the subprime crisis that tanked the nation's economy. Methinks he might go a little light on his banking buddies.

Opinion: Supreme Court's McCutcheon Decision Sells Out Our Democracy

Opinion: Supreme Court's McCutcheon Decision Sells Out Our Democracy
When the Supreme Court issued its 5-4 McCutcheon vs. FEC decision last week, it demonstrated once again just how out of touch with political reality it is. The Court found that big money in politics and the influence and access to elected officials that it obtains is not sufficiently corrupting to trump the so-called First Amendment rights of the richest Americans.

Court Rules for Labor in H-2B Visa Case: More American Workers, Higher Wages the Result

Court Rules for Labor in H-2B Visa Case: More American Workers, Higher Wages the Result
A major ruling in labor's favor: H-2b visas, those allowing foreign workers into the country to work, will now be regulated by the Labor Department's wage methodology. It layman's terms, it means that big business has to make sure there are no available American workers first, and they can't undercut those Americans' wages.

Gassy Knoll: 'Dirty Duo' of US Senate Looks to Lift Ban on Oil Exports

Gassy Knoll: 'Dirty Duo' of US Senate Looks to Lift Ban on Oil Exports
The two ranking members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee signaled they are prepared to introduce legislation to lift the ban on U.S. oil exports. Senators Mary Landrieu and Lisa Murkowski said that they would consider introducing legislation if President Obama does not otherwise lift the export ban. The Senators' rhetoric is eerily similar to the case that the oil industry made for itself back in December, when ExxonMobil called on the government to lift the export ban so they could sell American crude for a higher profit overseas.

State Department Finally Releases List of ‘Special Government Employees’
Last year, Politico reported that former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin had a special arrangement under which she simultaneously worked for the State Department and a corporate consulting firm. Watchdogs and others raised questions about Abedin’s status blurring the line between private and public sector employment. After a six-month delay, the State Department has now released a list of names with dual employment.

Lobbying Supergroup Launching PR Campaign Against NY Scaffold Law, Worker Safety

Lobbying Supergroup Launching PR Campaign Against NY Scaffold Law, Worker Safety
The New York Scaffold Law, in place since 1885, protects workers in cases of construction falls. But a lobbying supergroup has announced it will begin an advertising blitz against the law using misleading rhetoric to frame the debate as, among other things, one of lawyers against workers when in fact big contractor bottom lines are what they hope to protect.

AL Legislator Takes Lucrative Gig Before First Term is Up, Taxpayers to Pay for Special Election
When the GOP campaigned on their "Handshake With Alabama" plan in 2010 they didn't mention that it came with one of those gag "hand buzzers." Remember that the first item on their list was "creating jobs and economic opportunities." The GOP neglected to tell voters that their "jobs plan" was limited.

Law Derailed: Train Industry Seeks Another Extension for Safety Measures First Suggested in 1970

Law Derailed: Train Industry Seeks Another Extension for Safety Measures First Suggested in 1970
Despite a rash of deadly train crashes, the railroad industry's allies in Congress are trying to push back the deadline for installing technology to prevent the most catastrophic types of collisions until at least 2020, half a century after accident investigators first called for such safety measures. It's a prime example of the way lobbyists can work in Washington, even after a law is passed.
