Catch the Wind: Helium-Filled Turbine to Float 1,000 Feet Above Alaska

Catch the Wind: Helium-Filled Turbine to Float 1,000 Feet Above Alaska
Ridgeline wind continues to be controversial, and offshore wind comes with its own set of on-site issues, including a much higher installation cost. However, if America is ever going to replace fossil fuels with clean alternatives, wind has to be part of the mix. Some innovative designers and engineers have come up with a solution worthy of Jules Verne: floating turbines.

Koch Brothers-Funded Group Issues 'Study,' Gets it Wildly Wrong on EPA's Clean Power Plan

Koch Brothers-Funded Group Issues 'Study,' Gets it Wildly Wrong on EPA's Clean Power Plan
Not that we should expect any better from a group funded by the Koch brothers and other fossil fuel interests, but the bizarre "60 Plus Association" has really outdone itself on this one. The group is crying wolf on an EPA study showing that electricity prices will rise under the new regulations by 2020, but ignoring the fact that the actual cost to consumers will dip by as much as 8.7 percent.

Delay in Climate Action Means 'No Non-Radical Options Left on the Table'

Delay in Climate Action Means 'No Non-Radical Options Left on the Table'
“We have procrastinated for so long and allowed carbon emissions to rise year after year so there are no non-radical options left on the table. We cannot do this without radical changes to our political and economic system. This was not always so.”

The More You Know: Increased Fracking Knowledge Translates Into Disgust
The Oklahoman – owned by an energy tycoon – is making the argument that people protest hydraulic fracturing because they're just plain ignorant of how absolutely wonderful the process is for everybody. If only they acknowledged reality.

Report: Greenhouse Gases at All-Time High, 'We Are Running Out of Time'

Report: Greenhouse Gases at All-Time High, 'We Are Running Out of Time'
Yet another report from actual scientists suggests what needs to be accepted as fact by now: the world is burning and humans are at fault. According to Reuters, the World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday that carbon dioxide concentrations grew faster in 2013 than at any point since reliable records began. The results? A changing climate and extreme weather, all because humans continue to burn fossil fuels.

Not So Great Scott: FL Gov Refuses to Learn Anything from 'Lesson' with Climate Scientists

Not So Great Scott: FL Gov Refuses to Learn Anything from 'Lesson' with Climate Scientists
Republican Florida governor Rick Scott has always had a huge problem when it comes to the environment. To begin with, he has repeatedly made it clear that he does not believe in climate change, and certainly not the role that human beings play in exacerbating the problem. But, facing a fierce opponent with a stellar environmental record in this year’s gubernatorial race, Scott has had to swallow his pride and open up to the idea that he is wrong on climate change. The truth, however, is that the entire experience was more of a publicity stunt than a science lesson

Judge Rules Dominion Violated MD Constitution with Zoning Exemptions, Frackers Promise to Get Federal Permits

Judge Rules Dominion Violated MD Constitution with Zoning Exemptions, Frackers Promise to Get Federal Permits
Earlier this month, a court decision handed down by Calvert County Circuit Court Judge James Salmon could put Dominion Resources’ timeline for its proposed Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in jeopardy. Salmon ruled that an ordinance exempting the Lusby, Maryland-based LNG project from local zoning laws violated both a section of a state Land Use law, as well as Maryland's constitution. The facility will be fueled by gas obtained via fracking. Dominion is still confident that it'll receive the exemptions at the federal level.

Microsoft to ALEC: Buh-Bye

Microsoft to ALEC: Buh-Bye
Microsoft has cut its ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative public-policy lobbying group, CNET reports. The group’s lobbying efforts to block the development of renewable energy apparently was the last straw for Microsoft, which noted in a statement that the company had been involved in ALEC’s Communication and Technology Task Force, but had cut all ties to the group and would no longer pay dues to it.

Hawaii's Converging Hurricanes Product of Random Weather, Sheer Bad Luck
All sorts of weather factors came together for Hawaii's twin hurricane threat: stuck currents, an oddball brewing El Nino, slightly warmer water but mostly just bad luck.
