Mobile Justice: New App Empowers Public, Helps Keep Cops Accountable
“If you see something, say something.”
It’s a mantra that’s constantly drilled into us in post-9/11 America. But what if you see the cops do something wrong? How do you say something then?
Umm… there’s an app for that.
Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado unveiled a new smartphone app that lets users record police interactions that get automatically submitted to the ACLU. The footage is treated as legal intake to be reviewed by ACLU staff for any

A California federal judge ruled this week that the state's death penalty, which has created long delays and uncertainty for inmates, violates California's ban on 'cruel and unusual' punishment, rendering capital punishment unconstitutional. ICE Detention Orders: Violating the Constitution, Undermining Public Safety, Draining Local Resources

ICE Detention Orders: Violating the Constitution, Undermining Public Safety, Draining Local Resources
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is an unreliable partner that crafted an unauthorized and unfunded detention mandate woven from the whole cloth of anti-immigrant bias to the detriment of local communities. And it's not just same-sex (potential) parents who could lose adoption protections, it's everyone.

'Secret Criteria' for Immigrants Seeking US Citizenship Disproportionately Flags Muslims
A government program to screen immigrants for national security concerns has blacklisted some Muslims and put their U.S. citizenship applications on hold for years, civil liberties advocates said Wednesday. The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California said in a report that the previously undisclosed program instructs federal immigration officers to find ways to deny applications that have been deemed a national security concern. For example, they flag discrepancies in a petition or claim they didn't receive sufficient information from the immigrant.
