Tax Exemption for Churches Ruled Unconstitutional in Federal Court

Tax Exemption for Churches Ruled Unconstitutional in Federal Court
Last week, the Freedom From Religion Foundation won a decision in the United States District Court in Wisconsin in their case that challenged a little-known law established specifically to provide government subsidies to churches. The parsonage exemption was passed at the height of the Red Scare and is estimated to save "ministers of the gospel" billions of dollars in taxes every year.

Methodist Pastor on Trial for Officiating Gay Son's Wedding

Methodist Pastor on Trial for Officiating Gay Son's Wedding
Supporters held signs and sang hymns on Monday outside of a church trial in southeastern Pennsylvania for a United Methodist pastor who could be defrocked for officiating at his son's same-sex wedding. The Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon could face punishment ranging from a reprimand to suspension to losing his minister's credentials if a jury composed of fellow Methodist clergy convicts him of breaking his pastoral vows by presiding over the 2007 ceremony in Massachusetts.

Creationists: Thorns On Plants Debunk Evolution

Creationists: Thorns On Plants Debunk Evolution
In an Institute for Creation Research radio bulletin, Dr. John Morris claimed that thorns on plants are proof that evolution is nothing but a myth. He told co-host Chris O’Brien that Genesis 3 includes a curse on plants as “thorns and thistles are a direct result of Adam’s sin.”

Robertson: Ask Your Gay Son If His Coach Molested Him
Televangelist Pat Robertson told a parent who asked him how to talk to her gay son “to be understanding,” but also to ask her son if he was molested by his coach. “Is there a biological thing going on or has he been influenced, has a coach molested him?” Robertson asked, a comment based on the anti-gay myth that children are “recruited” into homosexuality.

Robertson: Mother Who Can't Heal Son's Deafness Must Be Doing Something Wrong
Pat Robertson says you must be doing something wrong if you can’t “heal” your son of deafness. After all, Robertson himself has healed deafness before, he said on the 700 Club today. Responding to a question from a mother who asked why her hearing impaired son hasn’t been healed despite her prayers, Robertson said that her son may be hindered by a “spirit of deafness.”

Corporations Claiming ‘Religious Liberty’ Try to Infringe on Their Employees’ Holy Freedom

Corporations Claiming ‘Religious Liberty’ Try to Infringe on Their Employees’ Holy Freedom
The birth control benefit no more forces employers to violate their religious beliefs than the minimum wage set forth in the Fair Labor Standards Act does. The birth control benefit simply seeks to promote gender equality and women’s public health, and attempts to achieve parity between the cost of health care for women on the one hand, and men on the other. Moreover, it is perfectly constitutional.

Atheist Authors Feud Over Islamic Extremism

Atheist Authors Feud Over Islamic Extremism
Yesterday I posted a tweet that read, “Sam Harris is to atheism what Pat Robertson is to Christianity.” Attached was a link pointing to an article titled, “Sam Harris slurs Malala: Famed atheist wrongly co-opts teenager’s views.” My tweet was silly, but in less time than it took to delete it, I received a sternly worded email from Mr. Harris that read, “The writer misrepresented my views in every relevant respect.”

VA Lt. Governor Candidate: America 'the Greatest Blessing Given to Mankind, Other Than Jesus Himself'
E.W. Jackson, the Republican candidate for Lt. Governor in Virginia, declared that he has not and will not ever apologize or repudiate any of the crazy or bigoted things he has said in the past, saying that the criticism he has received for his statements is rooted in "a growing hostility against Christianity, a growing hostility against those of us who believe in the Bible as truth."
