More Evidence Republicans Are the Anti-Science, Pro-Theocracy Party

More Evidence Republicans Are the Anti-Science, Pro-Theocracy Party
A few days ago, the Pew Research Center reported its disturbing - but sadly not surprising - finding that Republican "belief" in evolution has plummeted in recent years. I put "belief" in quotes, because any educated person should know that science has nothing whatsoever to do with "belief," but about data collection, hypothesis development, rigorous testing and experimentation, etc. In short, science is about empiricism and rationality, the opposite of "belief," religion, theology, etc.

Pat Robertson: Homosexuality is Contagious

Pat Robertson: Homosexuality is Contagious
Pat Robertson told a 700 Club viewer that she is right to be wary of inviting a lesbian friend over to her home, because that might cause her children to “grow up as lesbians.” Robertson, who has previously claimed that gay people are “trying to recruit more of the straight population,” said that while the viewer should love rather than shun her friend, she should tell her that she doesn’t approve of her “lifestyle.”

Remembering the Religious Right's Attacks on Nelson Mandela
The news today of Nelson Mandela’s passing is also time to reflect on the complicated relationship between Mandela and his anti-apartheid African National Congress (ANC) with the US, which did not always support the anti-apartheid struggle.

WI Gov Walker: 'Having a Copy of the Holy Koran on Your Desk' Keeps Your Job Safe
If Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's new book is a soft launch of his 2016 presidential run, it should also act as fair warning to voters: Walker is shamelessly biased and misunderstands what it fundamentally means to be American.

Tax Exemption for Churches Ruled Unconstitutional in Federal Court
Last week, the Freedom From Religion Foundation won a decision in the United States District Court in Wisconsin in their case that challenged a little-known law established specifically to provide government subsidies to churches. The parsonage exemption was passed at the height of the Red Scare and is estimated to save "ministers of the gospel" billions of dollars in taxes every year.

Methodist Pastor on Trial for Officiating Gay Son's Wedding
Supporters held signs and sang hymns on Monday outside of a church trial in southeastern Pennsylvania for a United Methodist pastor who could be defrocked for officiating at his son's same-sex wedding. The Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon could face punishment ranging from a reprimand to suspension to losing his minister's credentials if a jury composed of fellow Methodist clergy convicts him of breaking his pastoral vows by presiding over the 2007 ceremony in Massachusetts.
