Former GOP Congressman: Trump Should Be Removed From Office

Former Rep. David Trott (R-MI)

Former Rep. Dave Trott (R-MI) is the latest Republican to say Donald Trump should be removed from office.

In a letter to the Atlantic, Trott wrote that Trump's behavior is "frightening" and that "Trump is psychologically, morally, intellectually, and emotionally unfit for office."

"We can only hope Congress impeaches and removes him so we have a choice between two adults in 2020," Trott wrote.

Trott — who once criticized Trump in a closed-door meeting — retired from Congress in 2018, after he realized that his distaste and lack of support for Trump was incompatible with the GOP electorate.

"If I was still there and speaking out against the president, what would happen to me?" Trott told the New York Times in an article about how Trump took over the Republican Party, adding that Republicans who do speak out will face a "social media barrage" that makes it hard to win a primary.

Trott's retirement from his suburban Detroit House seat led the way for Democrat Haley Stevens to win in 2018 — helping Democrats retake the House majority for the first time in nearly a decade.

The district was one of a number of suburban seats Trump carried by a slim margin, but that Democrats picked up in the 2018 blue wave.
