DARE to Make a Difference in Our Elections

Standing before his colleagues and the crowd in the sweltering August heat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich declared that while it hot outside, if we don’t act on campaign finance reform we were going to find ourselves “somewhere even hotter.”
Kuncinich’s warning of a proverbial Congressional-hell does not seem far off given our current campaign arena. Citizens United has opened the floodgates on unlimited spending from secret sources, and the time has come for decisive action to reclaim our democracy.
This past Wednesday, Democratic House members held a press conference on their DARE agenda. In addition to Kucinich, the group included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, House Democratic Caucus chair John Larson, DISCLOSE Act sponsor Chris Van Hollen, as well as Representatives John Sarbanes, James McGovern, Adam Schiff, and David Cicilline. In addition to Common Cause, organizations such as Public Campaign Action Fund, Public Citizens, and Americans for Campaign Reform came out to the press conference in support, and Nick Nyhart of Public Campaign spoke in praise of DARE.

Like The Gipper, Mitt Loves Unions ... in Poland

It seems Mitt Romney has finally found a union he likes.
“Solidarity was a great movement that freed a nation,” the soon-to-be GOP presidential nominee gushed on his recent trip to Poland.
I guess Romney figures he won one for The Gipper. President Ronald Reagan, Romney’s hero, never missed a chance to brag on Solidarity, the gutsy, grassroots free trade union movement which toppled Poland’s infamous communist regime in the 1980s.
Reagan said Solidarity fought for “one of the most elemental human rights—the right to belong to a free trade union.” He also declared that the Solidarity workers "remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost."

Republicans Give Up on Winning By Merit, Seek Affirmative Action

Every once in a while, I read a remark by some leading Vermont Republican (which is no large distinction) to the effect that "The voters should elect more Republicans because of the dangers of one-party rule." The latest whiner is House (Extremely Small) Minority Leader Don Turner, in the Sunday Freeploid.

Video: 100 Days to Go, From the Perspective of an Obama Volunteer

Bottom line: This is likely to be a close election, which means that it's going to take the efforts of every single Democrat, progressive, Obama-supporting Independent (or even Republican), and anyone else who wants to keep America moving forward, to win this election. The fact is, it could all come down to just a few votes in a crucial swing state like Virginia, which means that every conversation you have with a potential voter could make all the difference in 100 days. So, what are you waiting for?

Mitt Romney's Foreign FUNDRAISING Tour

Sure, Mitt Romney's foreign tour is proof that he's a diplomacy doofus, but his campaign is still laughing ... all the way to the bank. When he wasn't insulting the Brits in London, Mitt was raising millions from the people who made millions manipulating interest rates. Yeah, those guys at Barclays have plenty of easy money and they're eager to share the spoils with a fellow vulture-capitalist.

CO Secretary of State Gessler’s Proposed Election Rule Changes Draw Heated Objections

Over the course of a five-hour rulemaking hearing Monday, Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler probably got the message that a lot of people are unhappy with proposed rules that would stop county clerks from mailing ballots to inactive voters in some elections, change the way canvass boards are selected and give county clerks more power to determine how much access election watchers have.
