Note to Right-Wingers: America Has Always Been a Refuge from Violence

Note to Right-Wingers: America Has Always Been a Refuge from Violence
The phenomenon of people fleeing violence and parents making hard choices to protect their kids is nothing new. That is the exact dynamic that is playing out at our Southwest border today. The arrival of tens of thousands of young migrant children, many of them travelling alone, mirrors the escalating violence in their Central American homelands.

Blame the President for the Surge of Central American Immigrants: President Reagan

Blame the President for the Surge of Central American Immigrants: President Reagan
What a difference a year makes. This time last year there was a sense that comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level may happen in some form. It would be sweeping and, like any compromise, not exactly what everyone wanted. Now we have something worse: only the noise of recrimination. So while John Boehner wants to point fingers at the President, he should probably point a little further back in history.

ICE Detention Orders: Violating the Constitution, Undermining Public Safety, Draining Local Resources

ICE Detention Orders: Violating the Constitution, Undermining Public Safety, Draining Local Resources
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is an unreliable partner that crafted an unauthorized and unfunded detention mandate woven from the whole cloth of anti-immigrant bias to the detriment of local communities. It is time to focus on what local communities do well and wash local hands of this mess. ICE detainers are requests to local law enforcement to hold the person in the request for up to 48 hours. Discretion to enforce those requests rests with local law enforcement, who also foots the bill.

Video: VA Town Disturbingly Readies the Torches and Pitchforks for a Proposal to Help Refugees

Video: VA Town Disturbingly Readies the Torches and Pitchforks for a Proposal to Help Refugees
A town hall meeting in Lawrenceville, Virginia, revealed loud and clear the people's honest feelings about the prospect of housing young refugees from Central America in an abandoned college campus: "We don't want you here." The deal, which was signed by the federal government, was attacked viciously from the townspeople and filmed by the "Story of America" series. The video — after the jump — is disturbing, both for its proud racism and the boisterous manner in which that hate is expressed and ultimately cheered. Sometimes in the name of Jesus.

Amnesty Shamnesty: Republican Party Still Battling Itself Over Immigration

Amnesty Shamnesty: Republican Party Still Battling Itself Over Immigration
Republicans must do something about immigration reform now or they will find themselves speeding into another presidential election year wrestling with the same “Latino problem” that destroyed any chance for a Republican victory in the last election. But will the Tea Party fringe of the GOP let anything happen?

Alabama's $580k Lawyer Donation

Alabama's $580k Lawyer Donation
So far, Alabama State Senator Scott Beason's signature anti-immigrant legislation, HB56, has stuck the whole state in Beason lines, hurt Alabama farmers, captured foreign auto executives, stained the state's reputation around the world, and cost real money that the state does not have. The latest court settlement brings Alabama's legal costs defending the overreaching bill to over half a million dollars.

AFL-CIO: Threat of Deportation Preventing Immigrants from Reporting Bad Bosses, Unsafe Working Conditions
The AFL-CIO is calling on the Obama Administration to cease needless deportations in order to encourage immigrants to report unsafe workplace conditions and safety violations. The labor lobby recommends that the Department of Homeland Security grant low-priority immigrants affirmative relief from deportation and work authorization.
