Forget owning assault weapons - a freshman tea party Congressman thinks the 2nd Amendment means ordinary citizens should be allowed access to the same exact equipment the military uses.
Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL), spoke with the Florida political blog The Shark Tank, and made the point that it's more important today than ever for ordinary Americans to have access to the same weapons that the military uses, so we can protect ourselves from the tyrannical government just as the 2nd Amendment prescribes:
Yoho: On guns, [my constituents] were saying that the sentiment, when you read the Second Amendment, is that the militia had the same equipment as the military to protect them against the tyrannical government. I think it’s more important today than ever, that we uphold our second amendment.

Keep in mind that when the founders of the Constitution wrote the 2nd Amendment, the pinnacle of weapons technology was the cannon, a far cry from the nuclear weapons, smart bombs and unmanned drones our current military uses on the battlefield.
I can see the campaign posters now: "A drone in every driveway."
